Wind Instruments

Bansuri

The bansuri or bamboo flute is a traditional Indian instrument that was recently adapted (twentieth century) to play Indian classical music.

The bansuri can have either six or seven holes. The traditional instrument has six, while the seventh was added to obtain greater versatility while playing certain grace notes. These flutes are tuned to the note produced when the the three upper holes are covered.

Shehnai

The shehnai is an ancient intrument of Northern India, used in both classical and folk music. It's built from a wooden body with a double-reeded mouthpiece inserted at the end. These can be exchanged to reach different registers.
